France went to the polls for the first round of presidential elections. A first step to determine if there will be a new resident in the Elysée Palace or if the current president Emmanuel Macron, who aspires to re-election, remains there. In this first round, the president led with 27% of the votes, followed by Marine Le Pen of National Regroupment, who obtained 23%. Next April 24 will be the second round of elections, a crucial date for French politics.
Once again, the French Executive will be disputed between an economic liberal, a fervent defender of the European Union, and a Eurosceptic anti-immigration policy that seeks to reinforce and promote the so-called “French values” and the concepts that have sustained the French Republic.
In this edition of El Debate we analyze the French political landscape after the first round of the presidential elections and how the scenario looks ahead to the final second round to determine who will be the new tenant of the Elysee. For this we talk with our guests:
– Pilar Martínez-Vasseur, BA in Contemporary History and PhD in Political Science from the University of Paris 1.
– Romain Guillemin, political scientist and public affairs consultant.
