The Kremlin proposed yesterday to explain the conflict in Ukraine to French actor Gerard Depardieu as “not understanding” the situation, after denouncing what he described as the insane and unacceptable excesses of Russian President Vladimir Putin, after he had previously praised the president.
“I think that Depardieu may not understand everything that is going on, because he is not fully integrated into the political news,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said. He added, “He does not understand what Donetsk and Luhansk (the two pro-Russian separatist regions of Ukraine) are, and does not know that civilians are being bombed there.”
“If the need arises, we are ready to explain the matter to him so that he understands better, if he so desires,” Peskov added. Meanwhile, Russian MP Sultan Khamzaev called on the authorities to withdraw Russian citizenship from Depardieu and transfer his real estate in the country to charities. Depardieu holds dual French and Russian nationalities, and obtained a Russian passport in January 2013, against the background of his objection to the tax policy of former President Francois Hollande.
