BUENOS AIRES (Reuters) – The Argentine government signed its accession as an associate member of the International Energy Agency (IEA), the country officially informed on Thursday, at a time of acceleration of projects in the sector for productive reasons. and macroeconomics.
Economy Minister Martín Guzmán formalized the procedure on French soil, where he traveled earlier this week to reschedule the maturity of Argentina’s debt with the Paris Club.
“We are pleased to join AIE as an associate member. We look forward to working together in an articulated way,” she said. “It is a good time for Argentina to join the IEA, because accelerating the development of the energy sector is a priority for our government.”
The IEA is a global organization, created by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) after the 1973 oil crisis.
In Argentina, the so-called Vaca Muerta formation stands out, the world’s fourth largest reserve of oil and second of unconventional gas.
Guzmán took advantage of the meeting for a working meeting with the Minister of Mines and Energy of Brazil, Bento Albuquerque, with whom he analyzed the regional energy integration agenda. Both countries play an important role in the Mercosur customs union.
“It is fundamental to work in an articulated way to strengthen the energy integration of our South America, giving rise to a larger-scale market that results in a significant increase in production, improvement of energy security in the region and reduction of production costs, which increase the productivity of the regional industry”, said Guzmán.
On the agenda, it was agreed that the Argentine minister will travel to Brazil on April 8 to continue the dialogue with Albuquerque. On the occasion, he will also meet with the Minister of Economy, Paulo Guedes.
