It could be as simple as that: place a cup, press the button and drink coffee. But things get complicated when the degree of grinding is wrong, the milk froth should be creamy or cleaning is due. How good are the three coffee machines?
“Could I have a coffee?” is a precise question when asked in an Italian restaurant. A few minutes later the waiter will put an espresso on the table. The same question can lead to an exhausting dialogue in a German cafe. Should it be a filter, espresso, cappuccino, flat white, café latte, americano, doppio or latte macchiato? Small, medium or large? With oat milk, lactose-free or fresh cow’s milk?
The world of coffee has gotten complicated. Not only the café operators have their part in this, but also the manufacturers of fully automatic coffee machines. When De’Longhi advertises the new Eletta Explore with “40 pre-installed recipes”, one wonders whether those responsible had too much caffeine in their blood during development. In contrast, the “18 preset drink options” of the WMF Perfection 880L seem downright minimalist. Only Tchibo isn’t going along with the madness. The Esperto Pro offers espresso, lungo and cappuccino. Nothing else.
