Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), who ordered the blocking of the Telegram app in Brazil, gave the company 24 hours on Saturday (19) to comply with pending court orders and reverse the suspension.
“Telegram, so far, has partially complied with the court orders, and full compliance is necessary for the decision to be withdrawn,” Moraes said in a new resolution. His decision to suspend the platform in Brazilian territory for not cooperating with the Justice was announced on Friday.
A key part of President Jair Bolsonaro’s electoral strategy, the messaging app continued to function normally this Saturday, but mobile operators such as Tim have been notifying their customers by SMS about the blockade starting on Monday.
The new deadline to reverse the decision was given after the founder of Telegram apologized to the STF, claiming that the violations were due to a “failure of communication” by misplaced emails, and asked for more time to catch up with requests. .
After establishing contact between the platform and the STF, Moraes agreed to give the company 24 hours to fulfill its pending issues, including the appointment of a legal representative in Brazil, the elimination of profiles and the detailing of what measures the company adopts to combat the misinformation.
In parallel, the Brazilian government tried to reverse the suspension. The Attorney General’s Office (AGU) filed an appeal this Saturday morning to Minister Rosa Weber, arguing that the measure is disproportionate and lacks legal basis. For now, the STF has not commented on this request.
