The founder and CEO of the Telegram messaging app, Russian Pavel Durov, apologized this Friday (18) to the Federal Supreme Court (STF) of Brazil and said that the block determined by Minister Alexandre de Moraes is due to a “failure of communication”.
“We seem to have an issue with emails between our corporate telegram.org addresses and the Brazilian Supreme Court. As a result of this communication failure, the Court decided to block Telegram for not responding,” Durov wrote on his channel on the platform, which has more than 680,000 followers.
“On behalf of our team, I apologize to the Brazilian Supreme Court for our negligence,” added Durov, who also asked for a new deadline to meet the demands of the STF.
Earlier, Minister Alexandre de Moraes had ordered the “complete and integral suspension of the operation of Telegram activities in Brazil” for failing to comply with several court orders, including the blocking of accounts that disseminate disinformation.
Durov claimed in his message that part of the STF requests were sent to an “old e-mail address, which has a broader and general purpose”, but which have now been located and processed by the company.
“I ask the Court to consider delaying its decision for a few days at its discretion to allow us to remedy the situation by appointing a representative in Brazil and creating a framework to react quickly to future urgent issues like this,” he added.
Telegram, which has already been banned or restricted in several countries such as India and Russia, has been in the crosshairs of Brazilian authorities for some time, especially irritated by the fact that the company has no legal representation in the country and has not responded to their demands to avoid an avalanche of misleading information in this year’s presidential elections, such as those that rocked the 2018 election campaign, especially via WhatsApp.
The popular application, of Russian origin and based in Dubai, is installed on 53% of Brazilian cell phones and is the fastest growing in the country, according to the Superior Electoral Court (TSE).
In addition, the platform is fundamental in the electoral strategy of President Jair Bolsonaro, who defends unlimited freedom of expression.
