European Union (EU) leaders ruled out this Friday (11), at the end of the bloc’s two-day summit, held in Versailles, France, the rapid accession of Ukraine, as requested by the country’s president, Volodymyr Zelensky.
“We must show great respect for the Ukrainian citizens and leadership. I can understand the emotional response and expectations. Yesterday, the EU gave a strong and clear message that Ukraine’s destiny lies in Europe,” said French President Emmanuel. Macron, at a press conference after the meeting. “But can we have exceptional measures for a country that is at war? The answer is no,” added the summit’s host.
The nations that make up the bloc this week asked the European Commission to evaluate the candidacies of Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia, to verify if they meet requirements such as respect for the fundamental values of the European Union, the existence of institutions that guarantee democracy and an economy of Marketplace.
The appeal came just a week after Zelensky signed a letter of EU membership, which takes an average of eight months, as has happened with countries in the Western Balkans. The President of the European Commission, Ursula Von der Leyen, assured this Friday, also at a press conference, the European Union’s support for Ukraine in the short term. She assured that having a free and democratic country after the war will mean a major reconstruction supported by the EU.
