Mexico.- The Mexican government has authorized the regularization of the so-called “chocolate cars” that circulate in the national territory, with the purpose of reducing the crimes committed using this type of units and, at the same time, supporting the economy of the families that have these vehicles.
Last week, the Ministry of the Interior (Segob) published in the Official Gazette of the Federation (DOF) the agreement through which the provision published a few weeks ago is modified for the legalization of cars that are illegally introduced into the Mexican Republic from United States.
Among the rule changes, it stands out that customs will no longer be in charge of processing the regularization of chocolate cars, but now it will be the Public Vehicle Registry (I repuve) the body that performs the process.

So far, only the state of sound has enabled the option of carrying out the regularization of this type of vehicle digitally; while the rest of the 11 federal entities authorized to carry out this procedure have not yet announced whether they will also use electronic means for this purpose.
The government of Sonora made it public knowledge that it will be from next March 14 of the current year when the Repuve enables the digital platform to start capturing appointments for the legalization of chocolate cars.
Among the data that the owners of these cars must upload to the portal are the CURP, the Vehicle Identification Number (NIV), the address, contact information of the owner of the car and the vehicle unit.
The local government explained that, as determined in the federal decree, the platform will not allow the registration to be completed in the event that the car has a report of theft or is subject to investigations for its possible participation in the commission of a crime. The people who are going to process the regularization of the chocolate cars must pay 2 thousand 500 pesos as a single payment.
