At least 90 Palestinian worshipers and three Israeli policemen were injured today during clashes on the Esplanade of the Mosques in occupied East Jerusalem, coinciding with the second Friday of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan and in a context of growing tension in the area.
Witnesses at the scene spoke of him Palestinians throwing stones at Israeli security forces and firing rubber bullets at some protesters.

Shortly before the start of the month of Ramadan this year, Israeli and Jordanian officials intensified negotiations to prevent further unrest.
These clashes in the heart of Jerusalem come after a series of attacks in Israel and operations by security forces in the West Bank, another territory occupied since 1967 by the Jewish state.
From March 22, Israel suffered four attacks, two of them claimed by the Islamic State jihadist organization and the last two linked to Palestinians from the Jenin area, in the West Bank.
These attacks caused 14 deaths. In addition, 21 Palestinians, including those responsible for the attacks, emerged with violence since that same date, according to the count.

In a first report delivered to AFP, the Palestinian Red Crescent reported seven wounded in the morning clashes in the Old City of East Jerusalem, an area occupied by Israel since 1967.

For its part, Israeli police reported that three officers were injured.
