He forced displacement has reached record levelsand is already located in 123 million people. Of these, some 90 million live in countries that are seriously threatened by climate change, according to a new report from the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) which was published this Tuesday.
Half of these people, forced to leave their homes or places of origin – in most cases fleeing war, violence or persecution – are in countries affected by both conflict and serious climate risksas Ethiopia, Haiti, Burma (Myanmar), Somalia and Sudan.
“The climate crisis is causing displacement in regions that already host large numbers of uprooted people, aggravating their plight and leaving them with nowhere safe to go,” said the UN high commissioner for refugees, Filippo Grandion the occasion of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention on Climate Change (COP29). This conference is also known as the “Paris Agreement”which has been celebrated since Monday in Azerbaijan.
He internal armed conflict in Sudan has been one of the main factors that have increased the number of forcibly displaced people exposed to climate change, with more than 700,000 refugees having crossed since the war broke out in April 2023 to neighboring Chadone of the countries in the world most exposed to climate change.
Another example is Bangladesha country where natural dangers such as cyclones and floods are classified as “extreme” and where 72% of refugees from Burma (Myanmar) have arrived, mostly Rohingya fleeing ethnic persecution in their country and who have found refuge in this country.
According to the organization, it is estimated that for the year 2040 the number of countries facing extreme dangers related to climate change increase from three to 65the vast majority of which host displaced people. The report also reveals that the impact of extreme weather will increase significantly in settlements and refugee camps around the world, doubling the number of days of “dangerous” heat they will experience by 2050.
These effects of climate change, UNHCR warns, are also exacerbating the causes of displacement, with at least 220 million internally displaced people who have fled their places of origin due to meteorological disasters in the last decade.
With this data, UNHCR has launched an appeal for greater climate financing to the countries most in need. It also urges States to protect forcibly displaced people who face the additional threat of climate disasters and to give them and the communities that host them a voice in financial and political decisions that directly affect them.
