It came into the possession of a well-known Parisian collector in the last century, says auction house Osenat in the French city of Fontainebleau. The object remained in the family: she passed the vase on to her daughter, who in turn passed the object on to her daughter. The latter now put it up for auction.
The lot was part of an auction of furniture and various art objects. According to experts, the vase was worth between 1,500 and 2,000 euros. In the end, the piece went under the hammer for no less than 7.7 million euros, making the buyer 9.121 million euros poorer, including costs.
The value of Chinese vases depends on the period in which they were made. If they come from the 20th century, as the experts had concluded with this vase, it is a fairly everyday object. A Chinese vase from the 18th century, on the other hand, is extremely rare and would be worth millions.
,,The moment we made the catalog public, we saw that something was moving. Many Chinese came to look at the vase more and more,” says Cédric Laborde of Osenat. “The expert, however, insisted that the vase was not old.”
Nevertheless, a bidding war broke out between twenty to thirty interested parties, the majority of whom took part by telephone. The final buyer is Chinese.
