Two decades after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, a video has been released showing a new perspective of the towers.
New York – What were you doing on Wednesday a week ago? With this question, most people start to ponder for a long time and rummage deeply in their memory. But we still know exactly what we all did on a Tuesday 20 years ago. On September 11, 2001, the whole world stood still and everyone looked at the shocking images from New York City. The terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center are considered a decisive historical event which, for many, meant the end of an “innocent and simple” world. Almost 3,000 people died in the plane attacks in New York and Washington.
The terrorist attacks on the Twin Towers were captured in numerous photos and videos. Many of them came from private individuals who had recorded the horrific minutes with their hobby cameras. A video has now appeared on the YouTube video platform that shows the assassination from a completely new angle.
Terrorist Attacks on the World Trade Center – never-before-seen footage released
More than 20 years after the September 11 terrorist attacks, Kevin Westley releases his recordings. The clip lasts around eight minutes and begins when the North Tower is already on fire. Westley’s film shows smoke rising into the sky and fire blazing from the 99th floor. As a reminder: At that time, most people still assumed it was a terrible accident. However, that changed at the latest when the second hijacked plane headed for the south tower.
In the previously unknown video recordings of the American, the plane can be seen after about two minutes. It crashes into the south tower with a loud bang, people right next to Kevin Westley scream in disbelief.
Attacks on the World Trade Center – new video surfaced
But what makes the video, which was only released two decades after the terrorist attacks in New York, so interesting? It shows the attacks from a completely different perspective than previous recordings, because at the time of the attacks Kevin Westley was on a boat that was sailing on the Hudson River off Manhattan Island.
The video went live on YouTube on February 24, 2022 and reached over two million people in just a few days. But why has it only been published now? In the video description, Kevin Westley answers this question: “I posted this video in the 2000s but accidentally left it private until now. I was holding a Sunday service on a Boy Scout outing (…) I noticed the video was private and made it public.”
Terrorist attacks of September 11th – at 8:46 am the nightmare began
On Tuesday, September 11, 2001, a total of four US planes were hijacked by the Islamist terror network Al-Qaeda. Two planes hit the Twin Towers in New York, the third hit the Pentagon, and the fourth crashed near Pittsburgh due to passenger resistance. The destination of the last machine was the Capitol.
At 8:46 a.m., the first plane flew into the North Tower. While the people in the south tower were being advised to remain calm, the next machine was already on its way. 17 minutes later the south tower was hit. Within an hour, the World Trade Center collapsed, engulfing everyone inside.
Almost 3000 people lost their lives that day. Every year, the victims of the terrorist attacks are commemorated. A memorial now stands where the Twin Towers used to stand. One World Trade Center has been in New York since 2014. (jol)
