Eight out of ten Spaniards (78.2%) consider that If television, radio and the press did not exist, more misinformation would circulateand even more than 77% of young people aged 18 to 34 support this statement.
This is clear from the 2024 wave of the barometer on social perception of free-to-air television. UTECA, the commercial television employers’ association, made by Sigma Dos and the consultancy Dos 30 and broadcast this Thursday, which is World Television Day.
The channels through which citizens claims to receive the most truthful, reliable and verified information from television (53.2%, up 7.3 points compared to 2023), radio (41.5%) and the press (40.4%), ahead of social networks (10.4%, falling 5.5 points in one year) and platforms (4.3%).
To be informed daily about what is happening, television is also the preferred channel (68.2%), while social networks (32.1%) fall 5.3 points and are surpassed by the press (44.1%) and the radio (32.4%).
The preference for television is even greater when it comes to finding out about an extraordinary event or impactful news since Citizens mostly opt for free-to-air TV (72.6%), followed by the press (42.3%), while the networks remain in third place (33%), with a decrease of six points compared to 2023.
Furthermore, TV (64.7%) surpasses social networks (25.2%) as the most entertaining and the one that helps the most to educate (53.3%) compared to the networks that are the least chosen to distract (9.8%).
90% of parents say they feel calmer when their children watch TV when they browse the internet. Television (66.6%) is the channel they trust most for their children to consume alone because its content is more controlled.
At the opposite pole are social networks (7.5 points), which are the channel in which parents trust the least so that their children are alone consuming them. The platforms are in penultimate position, with 13.7%, 3.9 points less than in 2023.
On this TV Day, the Funcas analysis center, which manages the CECA banking association, has also released a Flash Eurobarometer about the use of television and other media to access news.
The question posed to respondents is which of the following media outlets have you used the most to access news in the last seven days?and 74% of Spaniards have included television among their sources of informationalmost 45 points above the radio.
The data was collected in October 2023, a critical month from an information point of view, since on October 7 the Hamas terrorist attacks against Israel took place.
