US President Joe Biden confirms the planned replacement of the ambassadorial post in Germany: Political scientist Amy Gutmann is to head the diplomatic mission in Berlin in the future. The 71-year-old president of the renowned Pennsylvania University with German-Jewish roots would be the first woman on the post. The personnel officially announced on Friday had already leaked a few days ago.
Gutmann’s nomination has yet to be approved by the US Senate, which could take a few more weeks or even a few months. Great importance is attached to the new beginning in German-American relations. The ratio had reached a low point under ex-President Donald Trump.
The post of ambassador has been vacant for more than a year. Richard Grenell, who was sent by Trump, resigned at the beginning of June last year. Since then, the embassy has been provisionally led by envoy Robin Quinville.
