A Zagato is always a top spot. We've turned up seven for you!
You can find them stunningly beautiful or hideously ugly, but Zagato's creations are always interesting. This week we were introduced to a brand new Zagato: the AGTZ Twin Tail, based on the Alpine A110. Only 19 copies of this car were made, so the chance that you will ever come across one is extremely small.
Zagatos are always rare, but it is not completely impossible to spot one. We delved into the Autoblog Spots archives to see which special Zagatos have ever appeared in the wild. We mainly focus on modern Zagatos, even though this design house of course has a rich history.
Aston Martin DBS GT Zagato
Spotter: @dutchstylez
We could have grabbed an Aston Martin Vanquish Zagato, but with a total production run of 325 units, it is not very rare by Zagato standards. This DBS GT Zagato is therefore slightly more interesting. This model looks a lot like the Vanquish Zagato, but – as the name suggests – it is based on the DBS Superleggera. A special detail is the absence of the rear window. Also special: you could only buy this car in combination with a DB4 GT Zagato Continuation. The set price was £6 million and only 19 copies were built.
Alfa Romeo Zagato TZ3 Corsa
Spotter: @thomcarspotter
One of Zagato's most interesting modern creations is the TZ3. This is a modern interpretation of the Alfa Giulia TZ from 1963, of course also a design by Zagato. From a technical point of view, the TZ3 Corsa is secretly not an Alfa at all, because this car is based on the Gilleto Vertigo, a Belgian supercar. Under the hood is the well-known 4.2 liter Ferrari/Maserati V8. Only one example of the TZ3 Corsa was made, which can be seen above in Zandvoort. There was also the TZ3 Stradale. It not only had a different design, but also a completely different basis. This was technically a Dodge Viper, including V10.
Ferrari 575 GTZ
Spotter: @johandsoderlind
This is an instinct: based on the headlights you would think this is a converted 612 Scaglietti. However, it is a converted 575M. This is once again a tribute to a historic model: the 250 GT Berlinetta Zagato. The 575 GTZ was commissioned by a Japanese collector, but ultimately six were built. There was also a convertible version, but it was based on the older 550 Barchetta instead of the 575M.
Diatto Ottovù Zagato
Spotter: @Pumpstick
We had to dig deep into the archives for this spot: @Pumpstick spotted this car during a holiday in 2008. This car was brand new at the time. The special thing about this Zagato is that it is not based on an existing sports car. This car was intended to revive the Italian brand Diatto, which had already collapsed in 1955. Ottovù is Italian for V8, so under the hood is a 5.0 liter V8 from Ford. The intention was that 99 copies would be built, but very little came of this.
Bentley Continental GTZ
Spotter: @Zanmato
Another commercial from the old days: a Bentley Continental GTZ, which simply had a Belgian license plate. This car has not been spotted for a long time, so we fear that it has now been exported. As you can probably guess, this Zagato is a Continental GT underneath, a Speed to be precise. Nine copies were built.
Aston Martin DB7 Zagato
Spotter: @lenny98
Are there any Zagatos on Dutch license plates? Yes, this DB7 Zagato for example. This car has been on Dutch plates since 2007. Despite the American license plate, this car probably does not come from the US. The DB7 Zagato was only delivered in Europe and Asia, while the DB AR1 (the convertible version) was only delivered in the US. This is not the only copy in our country: there is also a blue DB7 Zagato on the license plate, plus two copies of the DB AR1.
Lancia Hyena
Spotter: @tk97
Although the Lancia Hyena does not have a Z in the name, it is also a Zagato product. Unlike the Alfa Romeo SZ, this car was designed by Zagato. The fact that the Hyena is reminiscent of the SZ is because the 'greenhouse' has been taken over from that car. As true connoisseurs know, the Hyena has a Dutch touch. We owe the fact that this car became a reality to the efforts of the Dutch Lancia importer Paul Koot. Zagato ultimately built 24 copies, based on the Delta HF Integrale Evo.
