Mainz 05, a team that at one time had Colombians Elkin Soto and Jhon Córdoba in its ranks, found a big surprise, in the middle of the remodeling works of a university that is near their stadium.
When removing the earth, the workers found buried nothing less than a 500 kilo bomb that was used in World War II and that did not explode.
The discovery forced a deployment to deactivate the bomb. This Friday, around 4,500 people living in a radius of 750 meters around the Mainz stadium will be evacuated to prevent any inconvenience.
The measure, in principle, does not require postponing the match that Mainz will play this Sunday against Cologne, a key duel for relegation.
What did change was the press hours of Mainz coach, the Dane Bo Henriksen, who attended to the media this Thursday, one day before the traditional schedule.
Cologne, on the other hand, is in the direct relegation zone: it is penultimate, with 22. It should be remembered that in the Bundesliga the last two in the table go to the second division, while the penultimate team plays a promotion with the third in B.
The two Colombians who played for Mainz
Elkin Soto was the first Colombian to play for Mainz. He arrived in the 2006-07 season, from Barcelona in Ecuador, and remained at the club until 2016. He came to be managed at this club by the current Liverpool manager, Jürgen Klopp.
Soto, champion of the Copa Libertadores with Once Caldas in 2004, is the Colombian with the most games played in the Bundesliga: He appeared in 160 games and scored 11 goals.
For his part, Jhon Cordoba played two years for Mainz (2015 to 2017), where he arrived from Granada in Spain. He managed to score 10 goals in 51 games before moving to Cologne. Today he is a figure in the Krasnodar of Russia.
