At least 41 people have died and more than a dozen are missing after several days of landslides and torrential rains in northern India, officials said Tuesday.

Officials in the Himalayan state of Uttarakhand said 35 people died in new landslides on Tuesday, after six died in similar accidents on Monday.

At least 30 of the victims died in seven separate incidents in the town of Nainital early Tuesday, after torrential rain triggered landslides and destroyed several buildings.

“So far, 30 people have been confirmed dead and many are still missing,” said Ashok Kumar Joshi, Uttarakhand police chief.

Joshi said that several remote parts of the mountainous region witnessed great damage due to heavy rains.

Local official Pradeep Jain said five of the dead were from one family whose home was swept away by a landslide.

Another landslide in the northern Almora region killed five people after huge boulders razed their homes, which were swept away by a muddy torrent.

At least six others died Monday in two remote areas of the region.

The Indian Meteorological Department extended and expanded the alert on Tuesday, with “heavy” to “very heavy” rains expected in the region over the next two days.

The Met Office said several areas were inundated with more than 400 mm of rain on Monday.

The authorities ordered the closure of schools and banned all religious and tourist activities in the state.
