PARIS (Reuters) – A faithful copy of more than 400 years of Leonardo da Vinci’s “Mona Lisa” will go up for sale at auction in Paris on Tuesday, months after another reproduction of one of the world’s most recognizable portraits is sold for a record price.

Leonardo’s original, which French King Francis 1st bought from the painter in 1518, can be seen in the Louvre Museum in Paris and is not for sale.
But the copy for sale, dated around 1600, is so similar to the original that the artist likely had close access to Leonardo’s version, auction house Artcurial said.
The house estimates that the copy will get from 150 thousand to 200 thousand euros.
“The Mona Lisa is the most beautiful woman ever painted,” said Matthieu Fournier, an expert and auctioneer at Artcurial, as the painting was put on public display before sale. “Everyone wants to own a high-quality version of the Mona Lisa.”
Leonardo, he emphasized, “had fans because he invented a style. He had followers, imitators.”
In June, a European collector bought another copy of the 17th-century “Mona Lisa” for €2.9 million, a record for a reproduction of the work, at a Christie’s auction also in the French capital.
In 2017, Christie’s of New York sold Leonardo’s “Salvator Mundi” painting for a record $450 million.
