Dhe Japanese government on Monday warned of power shortages given the country’s unusually early heatwave. She urged residents in and around Tokyo to reduce their electricity consumption, especially in the early evening hours when supplies are running low.
The JMA weather service expected temperatures of 35 degrees Celsius for Monday, and the heat is expected to last until next Sunday. The government and weather service warned people of heat stroke. Immediately after the end of the rainy season, many people are not yet used to the heat, so they are more likely to suffer from heat stroke, the weather bureau said.
This year, the rainy season ended 22 days earlier than usual in some areas: Normally, June still rains across much of the country, but the JMA has declared the season over in the Kanto region, where Tokyo is located, and neighboring Koshin. No rainy season has ended so early since records began in 1951.
In the city of Isesaki, north of Tokyo, 40.2 degrees Celsius were measured on Sunday – the highest values ever recorded in Japan in June.
