The prison’s deputy spokesman, Peter Chabraganda, told AFP that the incident took place Friday in a prison in the town of Hwange.
“The prisoners were in the prison yard,” he explained, when the lightning bolt struck around 11:30 a.m. (9:30 GMT).
The prisoners were taken to the hospital, “and the condition of four of them was considered serious and the other nine were in stable condition.”
Lightning strikes often accompany thunderstorms in Zimbabwe, killing many people each year.
