Paris France.- The first heat of the men’s 5000m featured one of the most spectacular collisions yet at Paris 2024.
In the final stretch, with 80 metres to go, Spaniard Thierry Ndikumwenayo was tripped from behind and fell to the ground, causing a crash for up to four competitors, including Dutchman Mike Foppen and Briton George Mills.
Tragedy struck these athletes on the tartan track at the Stade de France, as moments before this collision, Canadian Mohammed Ahmed had also fallen just before the final turn.
Ndikumwenayo was unable to even finish the test, after a few moments of confusion he went straight to a protection zone.
Incredibly, after being thrown out, Thierry was requalified by the judges to compete in this Saturday’s final thanks to an appeal by the Royal Spanish Athletics Federation (RFEA).
Mills and Foppen, involved in the crash, were also re-entered for the Final.
