Verstappen leads comfortably on the Red Bull Ring again
Yesterday Mercedes managed to close Friday as the fastest with a good time from Hamilton. This morning Mercedes announced that Hamilton can drive fast laps for the team for at least two more years. The seven-time world champion’s contract now runs at least until the end of 2023 with Mercedes.
Verstappen is the fastest again
In the first half of this training, everyone will be driving on the new test tires that will probably be introduced soon. Then the cars get soft tires and the drivers can practice for qualifying. Verstappen then immediately recovers his less fast time from yesterday. He manages to stay just under one minute and five seconds, putting him almost half a second ahead of Hamilton.
Bottas and Hamilton manage to go a little faster later in this 3rd free practice of the Austrian GP 2021. But if Verstappen also goes outside for a quick lap, the gap only gets bigger. However, Hamilton’s last fast lap did not count as he exceeded the limits of the track. But even with that lap the gap was still four tenths.
Verstappen therefore seems to have a big advantage for qualifying. Mercedes will have to pull open the bag of tricks if they want to start on pole position tomorrow.
