Although the idea of Internet sold us the idea that everything we do and publish stays stranded somewhere forever, this is not the case. Recent research has revealed that almost 40% of the sites created in the last decade have disappeared.
According to research from the Pew Research Center, 38% of the websites that were created in 2013 disappeared a decade later, that is, in 2023. This does not stop here, since eight out of every 100 sites that emerged in 2023 are no longer available today.
Moving on to other specific data, the Pew Research Center has revealed that 23% of news sites contain at least one broken link, and in the case of Wikipedia this number increases to 54%. Regarding social networks, 20% of publications disappear after a few months for multiple reasons, such as account suspension. An interesting number today is that more than 40% of publications written in Arabic or Turkish disappear three months after being published.
The investigation indicates that the elimination of internet sites and publications is due to the deletion or transfer to other sites, as well as the eradication of the main domain, something that is out of the hands of all users. On related topics, the price of internet could increase in Mexico.
Author’s Note:
It’s a shame that a lot of content is no longer available today. Not only are we talking about irrelevant publications, but also research cases and many important elements when preserving internet culture.
