From October 2023 to August 2024, 327,000 migrants have crossed this border, and the Enrique “Kiki” Romero and Felipe Ángeles municipal shelters – the first opened in 2021 and the second in February of this year – have served 25,790 migrants of 37 nationalities, Municipal President Cruz Pérez Cuéllar announced yesterday during his participation in the forum “Cities of the Future: The Leadership of Mayors in Migration Management in the Americas,” which took place in New York.
The people in mobility who have been assisted come from Venezuela, Honduras, Guatemala, Ecuador, El Salvador, Haiti, Cuba, Nicaragua, Peru, Brazil, Bolivia, Argentina, Chile, Belize, Colombia, Panama, the Dominican Republic, Uruguay, Jamaica and Mexico, said the municipal president. He said that according to data from the Customs and Border Protection Office (CBP), from October 2023 to August 2024, 327 thousand migrants have crossed this border, it was reported in a statement. However, according to the latest official CBP statistics, during the first 11 months of fiscal year (FY) 2024 – from October 1, 2023 to August 31, 2024 – Border Patrol agents of the El Paso Sector registered 243,618 irregular crossings into their country. Pérez Cuéllar indicated that the countries from which people in mobility at this border crossing come during 2024 are firstly Mexico, with 98,182 migrants, which corresponds to 30 percent; followed by Venezuela, with 70,667, which is equivalent to 21 percent. Cuba reached 8 percent with 26,297, while Colombia reached 6.6 percent with 21,839 migrants. “It is important to note that 2023 was the year with the most migration recorded in our border region, with a total of 482 thousand people crossing the border,” said the mayor, according to the information provided by the Municipality.
Safe routes proposed for migrants
At the meeting, the mayor also proposed topics such as the “Safe Route for Migrants” and a “Single Health Registry for Migrants.” His strategy consists of identifying health indicators and parameters in order to standardize each medical study and generate information on conditions to prepare mitigation and disease care strategies in each city. This registry must be linked to the Identification Card; in addition, the information generated must be shared in all cities that belong to the alliance to establish joint medical care actions. Another of the proposed actions is the portal for requesting entry to the United States for migrants, where they will be able to manage from their country of residence the request for internment in the neighboring country through a portal that generates and registers the procedure and also follows up on it, since this will prevent migrants from being exposed to the journeys, thus safeguarding their integrity. The international event was held in New York City with the participation of leaders from Latin America and was organized by the Mayors Council for Migration (MMC), Emerson Collective, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and CAF-Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean.
