3,000 affected by DANA are on medical leave receiving special Social Security protection

3,000 workers are on medical leave as a result of DANA and are receiving the special temporary disability of Social Security approved by the Government in the first package of measures and aid for the catastrophe, as stated this Monday by the Minister of Inclusion, Security Social and Migrations, Elma Saiz.

The head of Social Security has put the number at “more than 3,000” extraordinary temporary disabilities registered so far. Although the figure may increase, given that the decree provided for this special protection for medical leave of those affected by DANA that occurred between October 29 and November 30.

These sick leave that cover salaried and self-employed workers have a higher amount, since they are assimilated to work accidents, which means that they receive the benefit from the first day (not the fourth) and 75% of the salary. In addition, they do not require a minimum contribution period.

Minister Saiz has stressed that the benefit expands protection against “physical and psychological damage” due to the catastrophe that has especially affected the Valencian Community. The withdrawals are being processed and do not require any request from those affected beyond being made by health professionals from the public health system (as with any other withdrawal).

700 new applications for the Minimum Vital Income

“We are absolutely immersed in the deployment of the important package of measures that have been deployed quickly and effectively,” said Elma Saiz, in response to criticism from the PP about the alleged delay in aid.

In addition to the number of these special withdrawals, Elma Saiz has also stated that there are around “700” new applications for the minimum or vital income (IMV). This means that these families have found themselves in a situation of great vulnerability, since it is a benefit for households in situations of severe poverty. The second aid package approved by the Government made it easier to apply for this aid due to “emerging poverty” in the current year.

Elma Saiz recalled that the Government approved a temporary increase in the amount of the minimum vital income of 15% for three months, which already has “more than 70,000 recipients, 30,000 boys and girls.” In addition, a 30% increase has been approved in the amount of the child support supplement (CAPI), the monthly aid per child associated with the IMV, but which can also be received by households with up to three times more income.

Without official data yet on requests made for special aid for cessation of activity for the self-employed affected by the dana, Minister Saiz has mentioned that there are already “2,000” queries in mutual insurance companies about these benefits.

This Monday, the Ministry of Labor updated the data on ERTE due to the DANA catastrophe, with 1,498 companies having requested the measure, which reaches 18,668 workers.
