The General Administration of Civil Defense in Ajman has identified three procedures that must be taken into account to ensure the safety of children in swimming pools, with the approaching summer season and many families heading to spend their vacations in places where there are swimming pools.
As part of the “Safety in Swimming Pools” initiative, which it published on its digital platforms, it stressed that it is necessary to be careful to be near children while swimming, in addition to taking into account the depth of the children’s swimming pool, and constantly supervising children inside the swimming pools.
In turn, the President of the Emirates Society for Child Protection, Counselor Faisal Al-Shammari, said: There are seasonal accidents that occur constantly during the summer, including drowning accidents in the sea or swimming pools.
He stressed to Emirates Today the importance of spreading awareness of the dangers of drowning accidents, to prevent the same mistakes from being repeated, and to develop radical solutions for such accidents, stressing that it is wrong to have a home swimming pool without fencing it and having an adult accompanying the children, in addition to placing permanent or temporary sensors. To alert you of any movement in the pool.
He pointed out that the primary responsibility falls on the parents and guardians, calling on families to monitor their children, explaining that “negligence is considered a crime, because the human element is the cause of the accident.”
For her part, Widad Salem Al Mahmoud, a member of the Board of Directors of the Emirates Society for Child Protection, and Director of the Awareness and Studies Department at the Community Development Authority in Dubai, pointed out the importance of having facilities for children according to age group, especially since child protection in swimming pools requires focusing on swimming pools in homes and villas for families. The child plays freely at home, and the family may neglect to follow him.
She said that some swimming pools encourage children to love taking risks, and therefore there must be pools that are compatible with children’s heights.
Al-Mahmoud identified a number of requirements that must be followed to protect children, including parents’ adherence to protection standards inside the home, relying on companies to install the “rubber membrane” for the pool, and providing a “life jacket” to help children and protect them from drowning, with the need for the guardian to be present next to the child, stressing. However, the parents have the responsibility in this matter.
She explained that for clubs, schools, etc., the presence of one guide for a group of children is considered irregular work and does not meet the protection of the child. Rather, there must be people distributed on the sides of the swimming pool.
