Both broadcasts peaked near 12,000 people; at least, the PT member’s audience was half that of the former president
3 days before the municipal elections, the former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) and the president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) e) they did simultaneous lives on Instagram this Thursday night (3.Oct.2024). The audience for both broadcasts had similar numbers – both reached a peak of close to 12,000 people.
Bolsonaro’s live lasted around 30 minutes. The audience peak was recorded right at the beginning, at 7:13 pm, when the audience reached 11,400 people. In the following minutes, the audience ranged from 8,300 to 9,000 people. At 7:40 pm, around 8,380 people watched the former president campaign for the candidates he supports in the municipal elections.
Lula’s was shorter. It lasted around 9 minutes and was done with the candidate for Mayor of São Paulo Guilherme Boulos (Psol). At the beginning, there were only 5,337 people live – almost half of Bolsonaro’s audience. The peak was reached near the end, at 7:14 pm, when 11,400 people were online on the call.
Bolsonaro used his time to say that Lula had “run away” from live with Boulos. The virtual meeting was scheduled for Wednesday (Oct 2), but had to be postponed due to the problem on the presidential plane on the way back from Mexico City on Tuesday (Oct 1), which delayed the PT member’s return to Brazil.
The head of the Executive took the opportunity to justify the postponement of the virtual meeting with the psolist. He said that while he was on the plane, he was waiting for a “miracle of God” to survive. He stated that he thought about Boulos and the “people of São Paulo” while it was still in the air.
“I thought about my life, because I spent four and a half hours on the plane waiting for a miracle from God so that I wouldn’t crash. I thought a lot about my life, I thought about you [Boulos]I thought about the people of São Paulo, I thought about the humble people of this country that we try to help”, said the president.
PRESIDENTIAL LIVES
The live broadcast format to reach the masses was a strategy of the Bolsonaro government. The former president spoke live almost every Thursday at 7pm, and his main broadcast channel was his Facebook page.
Bolsonaro used to broadcast live directly from a cell phone with a simple, often improvised setting. He used to take ministers and even sing during the broadcasts. Sometimes I would call people who weren’t there and place the microphone near the phone to transmit the audio.
The PT member’s live strategy had another format, with professional support. It used high-quality cameras and a table and microphone in the style of current interview podcasts. The program was recorded and broadcast under the supervision of Secom’s Audiovisual secretary, Ricardo Stuckert, who is also Lula’s photographer.
The weekly live, called “Conversation with the President”, was interrupted in November 2023. The format and frequency are still evaluated by Planalto. There is no return date yet.
