Hamilton is faster than Verstappen
As in the first practice of this weekend, the drivers will also be able to test with the new Pirelli tires in the 2nd free practice of the Austrian GP 2021. However, the drivers now quickly switch to the medium tires and later to the softs. On the test tires and mediums, Verstappen continues his good form on the Red Bull Ring and is immediately at the top of the lap time board.
Mercedes faster on the soft tires
When the drivers switch to the soft tires, Mercedes finally seems to be getting into shape. On this fast rubber that was not available last weekend, Hamilton suddenly sets the fastest time with teammate Bottas behind him. Verstappen is then referred back to third place. So it seems to be a more difficult qualifying for Verstappen than last weekend.
Finally, the majority of the grid opts to continue driving simulations with more fuel. During these simulations, Verstappen seems to be just a bit faster than the Mercedes. This program makes it a bit more difficult for the drivers. It starts to rain softly, so that the track offers less grip. Hamilton locks his brakes and flies off the track in turn four. He can get through the gravel box and continue on his way. During the race simulations, Verstappen seems to be just a bit faster than the Mercedes.
