He November 25 is he International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Womena key date that revolves around the denunciation of the different forms of oppression and submission that women around the world continue to suffer. This day focuses both on pointing out the specific violence that falls on them, as well as on the vindication of political and institutional measures that allow us to continue moving in the right direction.
With the rise to power of world leaders who position themselves explicitly against the feminist movement and the exponential increase in social networks of testimonies that point to a large number of cases of sexual abuseharassment and sexist violence, this 25N comes loaded with challenges.
The first of them has to do with fragmentation. If these symbolic days, such as 25N or 8M, are characterized by something, it is precisely because of the development of demonstrations in different cities of Spain. On this occasion, feminism is divided again in Madrid, leading to the organization of two different protests. The Commission 8M will march from Atocha around 7:00 p.m. with the motto Together, fear changes sideswhile the Madrid Forum will leave at the same time from Cybele until Plaza de España.
For several decades, the objective of this commemorative day has been to condemn all types of sexist violence. Since the physical attacks and more commonly noted, until the verbal and psychologicalwhich on many occasions manifest themselves in other types of subjugation, such as economic, rape, sexual assault or vicarious violencethe most unknown and which consists of the instrumentalization of children in order to hurt women.
What is commemorated on 25N
The reason why this day is commemorated goes back several decades in feminist history. In 1981Bogota, Colombiawelcomes the First Latin American and Caribbean Feminist Meeting, where 25N is chosen as the official date to claim the murders of the three Mirabal sisters in 1960 in the Dominican Republic.
The Mirabal sisters were well-known activists who, although coming from good, middle-class families and with the possibility of accessing higher education, were not satisfied with individual privileges and chose to fight against the gender violence of that time that was perpetuated doubly by the dictatorial regime of Rafael Leonidas Trujillo.
One of them, Minervaled together with her husband the Patriotic Movement June 14. It was an opposition group that fought against the system imposed by Trujillo that led her and her two sisters to spend long periods behind bars.
The fate of these women was tragic. So much so, that the On November 25, 1960, their bodies were found in pieces. in a vehicle at the bottom of a ravine. Although the regime authorities tried to make it look like an accident, everything indicates that they were murdered by a group of hitmen sent by the dictator.
The role of the UN
In 1993the United Nations General Assembly (UN) approved the Declaration on the Elimination of Violence against Women. In it he defined violence against women as “any act of violence based on belonging to the female sex that results or may result in physical, sexual or psychological harm or suffering to women, as well as threats of such acts, coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty, whether they occur in public life or private life“.
Finally, the December 17, 1999the claim date was assumed by the United Nations General Assembly in its resolution 54/134. In addition, different governments, international and non-governmental organizations were invited to carry out activities to promote non-violence against women.
