Twenty-five people, including 18 soldiers, were killed over the weekend in South Sudan, after clashes between villagers and soldiers who came to retrieve their cattle, saying they were stolen, a leader in the northern state of Warrap said Monday.
The clashes, which began on Saturday and continued until Sunday noon, took place in the village of Walbit in the northern province of Tong.
“Civilians took up arms and started to fight the soldiers,” Warrap State Information Minister Reng Deng told AFP when the soldiers came to retrieve the cattle.
Deng confirmed the killing of “18 soldiers and seven civilians,” noting that a number of soldiers are still missing.
He condemned these events and appealed to the residents of the region “not to consider the government their enemy.”
