The tie with Citroën and Peugeot has been cut, the third generation of the Toyota Aygo follows its own path. The fun city car gets the suffix X pinned and turns into a stylish crossover. Because SUV models outsell cars with traditional body designs. But we already knew that, because the 2022 Toyota Aygo X already revealed a lot of secrets as the Prologue Concept.
The lines of the new Toyota Aygo X remain surprisingly close to those of the Prologue design study, with a two-tone body that accentuates the adventurous crossover shapes of the Japanese urban sprinter. The plastic wheel arch edges and the underbody protection plates on the bumpers provide the SUV feeling. The Toyota Aygo X comes with paint colors with “its own personality”: Chili (red), Juniper (blue), Ginger (beige) and Cardamom (green).
Higher, wider and longer
The 940 kilogram Toyota Aygo X builds on the GA-B platform of the TNGA architecture (Toyota New Global Architecture) on which the Yaris also relies. The body is 3.70 meters long and 1.74 meters wide, respectively 23.5 and 12.5 centimeters more than the previous generation. The ride height (+5 cm) and wheelbase (+9 cm) also increase, while the boot volume grows to 231 liters (+60 litres). The Toyota Aygo X comes with wheels up to 18 inches and with a turning circle of 4.7 meters.
The dimensions of the Toyota Aygo X:
- Length: 3,700mm
- Width: 1,740 mm
- Height: 1,510mm
- Wheelbase: 2,430mm
- Loading volume: 231-829 liters
- Weight: 940 kg
That body growth also results in more room to move inside. The dashboard is dominated by the central display of the Toyota Smart Connect infotainment system, which you can link to the MyT application for your smartphone with which you can monitor all kinds of data. Optionally, the multimedia module comes with a cloud based navigation system that promises live route information. The Toyota Aygo X is complementary to both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, has an inductive charger for smartphones and gets over-the-air updates. Also possible: a premium audio system from JBL and an open canvas roof.
no hybrid
Whoever says Toyota thinks hybrid. But this time you think wrong, because this crossover is only offered with a naturally aspirated 1 liter three-cylinder engine that combines a power of 72 hp with a maximum torque of 93 Nm. That power is transferred to the front wheels via a five-speed manual transmission, although you can also order the new Toyota Aygo X with the continuously variable transmission S-CVT. The sprint from 0 to 100 km/h takes 15.6 seconds and the top speed is 158 km/h, the S-CVT sets it in 15.5 seconds and 151 km/h.
The Toyota Aygo X boasts an average standard consumption of 4.7 liters per 100 kilometres, the CO2 equivalent of 110 grams per kilometre. The S-CVT consumes slightly more (4.9 litres), but has lower CO2 emissions (107 grams). In addition to being economical, this city SUV also wants to be safe, because the latest generation of the Toyota Safety Sense is also present.
Designed in Belgium
The Toyota Aygo X is a European product for the European market, the development of which largely took place in Belgium. The project leader is fellow countryman Stijn Peeters, who in the recent past was one of the leading forces behind the Toyota Yaris GRMN. He even talks about a game changer for Toyota Motor Europe, which operates from Zaventem. The development process, which lasted only 34 months, led to additional investments at TME. And at peak times, more than half of the R&D department was involved in the Aygo X project.
The Toyota Aygo X will be launched in the spring of 2022.
