“We are ready to punish that will betray the spirit of the regulation”. On the occasion of the presentation of the 1: 1 scale prototype of a 2022 single-seater at Silverstone for the 2021 British Grand Prix Ross Brawn had warned the teams that solutions adverse to the nature of the technical-sporting regulations will not be tolerated. The head of the sports area on behalf of Liberty Media also revealed that the pool of technicians who oversaw the new legislation voluntarily tried as an experiment to break the regulation by putting themselves in the shoes of the stables in search of gray areas to be exploited to find performance. At Red Bull they are convinced that they have already exceeded the 2021 project in terms of performance (at least as far as simulations are concerned) and several team principals have declared that they have supervised very different projects compared to the demonstration car unveiled at Silverstone.
When such significant changes occur in F1, the fear is to run into strokes of ‘genius’ such as the double diffuser of the BrawnGP that marked the 2009 championship, or the DAS put on track by Mercedes in the 2020 Barcelona tests, a solution banned starting from 2021. Nick Tombazis, technical manager of the FIA, interviewed by the Spanish newspaper AS, highlighted that at the regulatory level – as Brawn warned – the tools to take cover against illegal solutions studied by the teams in the design phase. In addition to the possible illegality, Tombazis also includes excessive costs or technological irrelevance as possible reasons for banning any ‘left-handed shots’ by the stables: “We can veto solutions – her words – a possibility that has existed for several years. It is a veto that affects ideas that are not positive for F1 in the long term. If a team adopts solutions, in our opinion, they do not follow the direction taken by F1, with excessive or irrelevant costs at the technological level, we will be able to prohibit them. It is possible to see some adjustments in the course of 2022 ″.
