Taxpayers who fail to pay IPVA in the State of São Paulo will have a fine of 0.33% per day of delay, in addition to late payment interest based on the Selic rate (basic interest rate in Brazil). After 60 days, the percentage of the fine is fixed at 20% of the tax amount.
If the vehicle owner continues without paying IPVA 2022, the debt will be registered in the Active Debt. With that, the name will be included in the State Cadin (Informational Register of Unpaid Credits of State Agencies and Entities).
If the person chooses not to pay IPVA 2022, he will not be able to carry out a new vehicle license. Detran stipulates a deadline for licensing. If this date is passed, and the licensing is not carried out, the vehicle can be confiscated, with a fine imposed by the traffic authority and seven points on the National Driver’s License (CNH).
Methods of payment of tax
Payment of property tax can be made at lottery outlets or authorized banking networks, through internet banking or at ATMs.
If the taxpayer decides to pay in a single installment, in January, he will have a 9% discount on the total amount. Payments are separated by dates, based on the taxpayer’s last license plate number. Check the table below with all the dates:
The State of São Paulo has around 26 million vehicles. Of the total, 17.8 million will have to pay IPVA 2022. Another 7.5 million are exempt, as they have been in production for more than 20 years. There are also 612 thousand vehicles exempted from payment as they fall into the following categories:
- taxi drivers
- Disabled people
- churches
- non-profit entities
- official vehicles
- Urban buses/minibuses.
The Secretariat of Finance and Planning of the State of São Paulo (Sefaz-SP), responsible for collecting state taxes, estimates a collection of R$ 21.8 billion with IPVA 2022.
