For the first-ever sprint race in Formula 1, Lewis Hamilton starts in the front row after a strong qualifying. Verstappen starts next to him. Behind it, Bottas and Leclerc start from P3 and P4. Most drivers start the race on the mediums, but Bottas opts for the softs.
Max takes the lead right away
Verstappen has a mega start when the lights go out, while Lewis has a hard time getting off the line. The Dutchman immediately takes the lead and then has to defend the entire first round against the Brit. He manages to do that, but in the laps that follow Hamilton continues to chase him.
Pérez, meanwhile, has fallen back a few places. He follows Alonso and Norris through Maggots and Beckets. However, he rides too much in the turbulent air, causing him to spin and go off the track. The Mexican keeps his Red Bull out of the wall, but falls back to eighteenth place.
Pole position for Verstappen
In the laps that follow, Verstappen manages to stay about two seconds ahead of Hamilton. Most battles also take place in the middle ground. Alonso managed to gain a lot of places early in the race, but then lacks pace. He has a train behind him and has to defend constantly.
Verstappen wins the very first sprint race in Formula 1 and takes pole position for tomorrow’s Grand Prix. Hamilton will start next to him and the second row will look the same as today.
