Lewis Hamilton was fastest in qualifying at Silverstone today. He will start at the front of the sprint race tomorrow and has Verstappen next to him on the front row of the grid. Bottas and Leclerc start the sprint race from P3 and P4.
Q1 and Q2
In the first session of qualifying, Max Verstappen continues his good form from the first free practice. He sets the fastest time again, but Hamilton is behind him with a late fast lap. Other than that, there are no big surprises in Q1.
In Q2, the biggest surprise is that Russell manages to get through to Q3. In this second session Hamilton manages to go faster than Verstappen. It will all be very close together when the battle for the front starting spot in the sprint race starts.
Where the drivers normally compete for pole position in this final qualifying session, that is not the case this weekend. Tonight’s top prize is a front starting spot in the sprint race. The winner of that short race will officially take pole position. It won’t matter much to the drivers, they just want to be the fastest in Q3.
When the drivers go around Silverstone for the first time, Hamilton is the fastest again. Verstappen is then slightly less than two tenths behind the Brit. The drivers get a second chance, but Verstappen cannot improve Lewis’s time. Hamilton will start tomorrow in P1 in the sprint race. Verstappen starts next to him on the front row. Bottas and Leclerc start behind that.
