The accused attacked the victim for the comments on social networks against the Government of the country
A court in Bangladesh on Wednesday sentenced about twenty people to capital punishment and another five to life imprisonment for beating university student Abrar Fahad to death in 2019. Prosecutor Mosharraf Hossain Kajal has said he is satisfied with the verdict, if Well, the family of the young electrical engineering student at the University of Engineering and Technology has regretted that five of the accused may still be alive, according to information from the newspaper ‘The Daily star’.
All of them would be members of the government party Awami League of Bangladesh and they would have beaten Fahad for a series of comments made through social networks and that would have caused protests against the Bangladeshi government more than two years ago.
Fahad was beaten to death by activists from the Bangladesh Chhatra League, the student arm of the Awami League, in his room at the student residence where he lived in October 2019. His body was found on the stairs hours later. In his posts, the student criticized an agreement signed by Bangladesh and India. The activists used cricket sticks and jump ropes to beat him. The verdict has been pronounced before 22 of the 25 defendants since three of them have fled.
Fahad’s father, Barkat Ullá, who has also gone to court, has said he is happy with the verdict and has asked that the execution “be carried out soon”. Defense attorneys, however, have indicated that they will appeal the sentence.
