At least 20 people, including children, died on Saturday when a boat they were traveling in sank in one of the rivers of Nangarhar province in the east of the country, according to a local official. The official in charge of the local communication department, Qureshi Badlon, wrote on the X platform, “A boat carrying women and children on board.” He drowned on Saturday morning, around seven o’clock (02:30 GMT) in a river in the Basul area.
He explained that five people survived the accident, the causes of which are still under investigation.
Rescue teams recovered five bodies, and continue to search for other victims.
According to local media, residents of this area frequently use boats, often in unsuitable conditions, to cross the river because there is no bridge over it.
