1,250 more people than expected died in the first week of December
In the first week of December, an estimated 4,300 people died in the Netherlands. That is 1,250 deaths more than expected for this period. The Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) reports this on Friday based on preliminary figures which it received from municipalities. Excess mortality has been going on since early August. This means that the number of deaths is higher than Statistics Netherlands expects based on statistics from previous years.
Excess mortality increased in all age categories. Most people died in the older age categories. For example, among the over-80s, 850 people died more than expected. In the age group of 65 to 80 years, 350 people died more than expected, while the number was 50 for people under 65.
Statistics Netherlands cannot say whether, and to what extent, the excess mortality in the first week of December is attributable to the corona pandemic, because it only receives information about causes of death a few months later. For all deceased up to and including July 2021, the cause of death is known at the institute. According to these figures At least 28,689 people died of Covid-19 from the start of the corona pandemic in March 2020 to July 2021. For another 2,884 deaths, CBS has designated corona as the probable cause of death.
