PT campaign has already hit the hammer to support Marcelo Freixo’s ticket with Ceciliano in the state
Senate candidates for Rio de Janeiro Alessandro Molon (PSB) and André Ceciliano (EN) are still vying, 12 days before the 1st round, for the support of the former president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (EN) in your campaigns.
Both support the candidacy of Marcelo Freixo (PSB) to the state government. The PT, however, has already slammed the hammer to support Freixo and Ceciliano’s ticket. Even so, Molon chose to go ahead with his candidacy.
In an interview with the newspaper The globereleased this Tuesday (20.Sep.2022), the PSB candidate defends that his name “has more chances” to defeat the candidate for re-election Romario (PL), supported by President Jair Bolsonaro (PL).
“PT understood that it was entitled to this vacancy [ao Senado], due to the fact that Marcelo Freixo (PSB) is running for government, although this has never been agreed upon. What matters is choosing the name with the most chances of defeating Bolsonaro’s candidate, which is Romario. This name, in the left field, was mine”said.
Regarding the deadlock between the candidacies, Molon stated that “tried to build” a unified candidacy with Ceciliano, but was unsuccessful. According to him, the reason for the impasse is because Lula “Want a candidate from his party”.
On the other hand, Ceciliano said he regretted that the agreement reached by the national leadership of the PSB was not fulfilled and reinforced Lula’s support for his candidacy.
“Lula made it very clear that he only has one candidate for the Senate and that is me. You can’t force a situation to become a victim again.”said the candidate in an interview with the newspaper The globealso released this Tuesday (September 20).
KEYBOARD
The dispute for space in Rio de Janeiro is the biggest edge in the national alliance between PT and PSB. With 12.8 million voters, the state is the 3rd largest electoral college in the country.
In August, Lula called on allies in Pernambuco’s PSB, the party’s most powerful directorate, to try to get Molon out of the running and close the Ceciliano-Freixo agreement.
The PSB’s National Executive decided not to provide resources from the Electoral Fund to Molon’s campaign.
This attitude strained the relationship with the PT in Rio de Janeiro, which had asked the PT leadership to break the alliance with Marcelo Freixo due to Molon’s insistence on running for senator.
In addition, Lula financed a support agreement that he built with Freixo over the course of months.
The former president is grateful to the pessebist for the support received from him when he was in prison. Molon, on the other hand, is seen as a Lavajatista by PT members.
The influence of the former president was important for the PT leadership to keep the support the PSB candidate for governor.
