A local source and a security source said on Monday that gunmen killed at least 100 civilians in a rural area in northern Burkina Faso at the weekend.
The militants attacked Setinga, part of the Sinoe region, which is located in the border areas, which is witnessing an insurgency by militants linked to al-Qaeda and the terrorist organization “ISIS”.
The security source told “Reuters” that at least 100 people were killed.
The local source, who asked not to be named, said the provisional death toll was 165. In a statement issued on Monday, the United Nations condemned the attack “which caused many victims” and demanded that the authorities bring the perpetrators to justice.
The government is expected to announce the death toll later today.
Gunmen killed 11 members of the military police in the same area on Thursday.
The highest death toll since the start of the security crisis in Burkina Faso reached 130 civilians, in an attack last June on a village in the north-east of the country.
