Two of them died on Thursday, June 13, in the municipality of Juárez, while the bodies of eight more were rescued between May 31 and June 12 in the New Mexico desert, under temperatures that this month have exceeded 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit).
According to reports from the authorities, on Thursday afternoon a Salvadoran unofficially identified as Delson Isaías Navas Orellano, 36, died at the General Hospital, who apparently a day before fell from the border wall while trying to enter the United States through the desert. between San Jerónimo and Santa Teresa, guided by human traffickers who would have abandoned him so that the Mexican authorities could come and rescue him.
Until yesterday, the Northern Zone District Attorney’s Office of the State of Chihuahua did not yet have the autopsy to determine the official cause of death.
On the same Thursday, at 5:00 in the afternoon, the Salvadoran Adriana Elizabeth Castellanos Ascencio, 23 years old, lost her life in the Samalayuca desert when she was with her cousins Diego José AR and Roxana Yamilet VA, both 24 years old. , with whom he had been walking for hours after they were abandoned by whoever would bring them to the border to reach the United States.
The three Central Americans were left on the highway from Ahumada to Ciudad Juárez so that they could go around the Precos military checkpoint walking through the desert, but Adriana Elizabeth did not manage to survive the hours on the road in temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius.
Her cousin, Roxana Yamilet, was the one who at 5:00 in the afternoon called the emergency number 911 to ask for help because her cousin no longer had vital signs, so the first to arrive at the scene were police agents. National Guard, who found the three Central Americans dressed completely in black, in the middle of the desert.
Diego José and Roxana Yamilet were treated by paramedics from the Red Cross, who took them to the General Hospital, while personnel from the Directorate of Expert Services and Forensic Sciences were in charge of processing the scene.
“His body was taken to the Forensic Medical Service (Semefo) to perform the legal autopsy and the analyzes that lead to his identification,” the Prosecutor’s Office reported yesterday afternoon.
According to the Chihuahua Health Secretariat, the two survivors presented symptoms of heat stroke, but yesterday morning they were already stable and out of danger, so both were discharged from the hospital.
In the last two weeks, firefighters and Border Patrol agents have also recorded the death of at least eight people on the borders of Santa Teresa and Sunland Park with Juárez, who lost their lives after entering the United States guided by human traffickers. .
So far in fiscal year 2024 – since October 2023 – the Border Patrol has carried out 681 humanitarian rescues and has recorded the deaths of 77 migrants throughout the El Paso Sector, which includes the entire New Mexico border and part of Texas with Chihuahua.
The causes have been diverse, mainly due to heat, drowning in irrigation canals and falls from the train or the border wall, in addition to some undetermined cases.
“Temperatures in the desert are extremely unforgiving, especially during the summer months. We urge anyone considering crossing illegally to understand the serious risks involved. Our officers are working tirelessly to save lives. But the best way to stay safe is not to try to cross illegally,” warned the US authority.
