The second most important competition on the European continent begins its qualifiers this Thursday with big clubs participating in them. We make a reminder of some teams that today are part of the most outstanding in the world that achieved the tournament.
The Europa League began with its particular format in the 2009-10 season, but its predecessor left great nights under the UEFA Cup system from the 1971-72 season. 50 finals since then have given us renowned champions, such as those that appear in the following list:
The London team won the 1971-72 and 1983-84 seasons, beating Wolverhampton Wanderers and RSC Anderlecht, respectively, in the two-legged final. He was also in the match for the title in the 1973-74 season, where he succumbed to Feyenoord Rotterdam.
The Anfield men won three crowns in the 1972-73, 1975-76 and 2000-01 seasons against Borussia Mönchengladbach, Club Brugge and Deportivo Alavés, respectively. They reached the final in the 2015-16 campaign for the last time, but they could not beat Sevilla.
The merengue team played two consecutive finals in this competition and won both, in the 1984-85 and 1985-86 seasons, against Videoton and 1.FC Köln, respectively.
The bianconeri they won the title in the 1976-77, 1989-90 and 1992-93 seasons against Athletic Club, Fiorentina and Borussia Dortmund, respectively. They could not add the fourth in their last final, in the 1994-95 campaign, succumbing to Parma Calcio.
The neroazzurri they achieved the title in the 1990-91, 1993-94 and 1997-98 seasons by beating AS Roma, Casino Salzburg and SS Lazio, respectively. They succumbed in two attempts against Schalke 04 (1996-97) and Sevilla (2019-20).
The Bavarian club has played a final in the history of the tournament. It was in the 1995-96 season and they beat Girondins Bordeaux. It is one of the 21 clubs that were crowned and never lost a game for the title.
The people from Seville are the kings of the competition, having managed to obtain six titles. They have prevailed in all the finals they have played, leaving Middlesbrough (2005-06), RCD Espanyol (2006-07), Benfica (2013-14), Dnipro Dnirpopetrovsk (2014-15), Liverpool (2015- 16) and Inter (2019-20).
The rojiblancos don’t know what it’s like to lose a Europa League final, having been crowned on the three occasions where they have reached it. They left Fulham (2009-10), Athletic Club (2011-12) and Olympique Marseille (2017-18) without a title.
The Red Devils they are one of the modern champions of the tournament. They managed to beat Ajax Amsterdam in the final of the 2016-17 season. In the last edition, they were unable to defeat a Villarreal team that prevailed in a marathon penalty shootout (11-10) after drawing (1-1) with the ball in play.
The Londoners have managed to obtain the title twice, the same ones in which they have reached the final. They achieved it against Benfica (2012-13) and Arsenal (2018-19).
