Three people were killed and 11 others wounded after a number of gunmen opened fire on a crowd on a crowded street in the US city of Philadelphia, police said.
The shooting took place on a busy street known for its nightlife.
Philadelphia Police Inspector DF Pace told reporters that two men and a woman were killed, noting that security personnel who rushed to respond to the incident “noted that there were a number of people who opened fire on the crowd.”
“You can imagine hundreds of people were enjoying themselves in (South Street) as they are every weekend, when the shooting started,” he added.
He pointed out that “many” officers were at the scene when the first gunshots were heard, as part of a “normal spread” in the area for a summer night at the end of the week. A policeman shot one of the attackers, who left his gun and ran away, but it was not known if he was wounded, Pace said.
Local media reported that the authorities have not arrested anyone yet.
Pace explained that two semi-automatic pistols were found at the site, one of which had a large magazine for bullets. But he indicated that police would have to wait until morning to see CCTV recordings of businesses that were closed on Saturday night. Commenting on the investigation, Pace spoke of “many questions that remain unanswered.”
